SMASHIN’ November 3, 2006

There has been a drastic change in my lifestyle since I’ve entered the black hole of yuppieness. For one, I don’t get to go out and party as much as I did in college. But that aspect is negligible, considering that everyday to me seems like an endless party – sans the cocktails and the hangover one usually feels the morning after.
What HAS become different is the fact that I couldn’t bring myself to the pool (or gym/field) to exercise! Events that entailed heavy physical activity (doing weights at home) has been sporadic in nature, and frankly, has been quite a bore.
However, yesterday was a light at the end of the tunnel (no pun intended) when my officemates at ALISI and I did some serious shuttlecock action at Rackets, down at Pasong Tamo (Chino Roces Ave.) in Makati. At first I was a little apprehensive, having heard that playing Badminton would cost me a lot and it was a sport for wimps who couldn’t get their hands on tennis rackets. After trying it out on an actual court (I was used to the “kanto” badminton I play at home), I found it kind of fun. It wasn’t that expensive too (last night I played free, thanks to Colen, Jahjah, Mitch and Matet), for P250 an hour – divided by 4 if you’ll play doubles.
Unlike in swimming, one wouldn’t expect to utilize all muscles in one sweeping stroke. Usually, the wrists and your stronger arm and legs are the ones doing the maximum work. This is great for hand-eye-body coordination (hear ye, hear ye, video game addicts) and for people who like the feel of sweat pouring out like crazy. Anyway, we played for roughly 2 hours on-stop, and still, I felt like the whole thing is still alien to me. That wouldn’t be a problem, since I see myself playing more of it in the coming weeks to diversify my swimming routine.
By the way, if I’m not in school, home or office, I’d be at the YMCA Makati pool.
